POZ SXSW Blog: Day Three - Understanding A Car Crash

What started as an exciting and major day for all SXSW goers and bands, including PropertyOfZack’s team members, turned tragic late at night following a drunk driver recklessly killing two individuals while injuring another two dozen. The below blogs from Jesse Richman, Erik van Rheenen, Ashley Aron, and Ali Killian reflect on the varied emotions the day brought forward.

From Jesse Richman:

These blog posts are supposed to be lighthearted, entertaining snippets that capture the spirit of fun, mania, and comradeship that are the hallmarks of the SXSW experience. But tonight, I’m having a hard time mustering up that joy, because while I was having a blast losing my shit to a ragingly life-affirming set from Laura Jane Grace and Against Me!, two people were having their lives taken from them, and another twenty-some maimed, when the car plowed through a barrier at the intersection of 9th and Red River and into a crowd of festival-goers.

So: I had a day. Some of it — interviewing Mexican twinkly-emo upstarts No Somos Marineros about all the great things happening in their own country’s scene, and trying to figure out with them how to break down the barriers erected by silly things like language and nationality — was pretty great. Some of it — watching Topshelf Records’ unofficial showcase get shut down by the cops while Braid’s Bob Nanna was waiting to take the stage — was a bummer. But all of it feels really unimportant right now.
I’m sorry to be such a downer. Even given a night to sleep on it, I think I’ll be able to shake off this sudden sobriety. But these blogs are pointless if they aren’t real, and for real, right now, I don’t have it in me to play happy. SXSW is a bubble, a little corner of the universe where music is the only thing that matters and the regular rules aren’t supposed to apply; today, someone crashed a hole in that bubble.

From Erik van Rheenen:

I wanted to write about my sheer giddiness at watching The Front Bottoms for the first time. I wanted to write about making fest friends and waiting in a far-too-long line for the showcase I looked the most forward to during my trip. I wanted to write about how transcendentally moving Against Me!’s headlining appearance at the Brooklyn Vegan showcase was, and how I couldn’t tell if I or Laura Jane Grace was having a better time at the venue.

I wanted to write about good news. I can’t.
